Colossal Diner

Student work- Font Design, Passion Project

Spring 2019, Spring 2020

In Lettering and Font Design class, I designed a font called Colossal. Using this font, I designed a diner system inspired by the font Colossal. Colossal diner is a 1930s style diner that uses art-deco style in a fun, bold way.

Font

Colossal is a san serif font inspired by Bodoni. Like Bodoni, Colossal has drastic contrasts in the thicks and thins but, unlike Bodoni, it is characterized by sharp, abrupt swells and rounded terminals. In the areas most fonts are smooth and rounded, Colossal is sharp and unexpected. These characteristics give it a bold, loud presence and uniquely elegant form.

Logos

Colossal Diner’s logos are inspired by 1920s/1930s logos. Some of the inspiration for these logos came from the book Trademarks of the 20’s and 30’s, found in the art library. Because Colossal is a bold, strong typeface, the logo needed to be simpler and easy to digest.
